Joan Smalls Wants to Make Your Butt ‘Look Good’, Collaborates with True Religion

Model turned designer, Joan Smalls, is unleashing her first collection for the denim powerhouse True Religion this month with a sixteen piece lineup composed of everyday basics from high-rise skinny jeans to workout crop tops.

“I went for simple and comfortable, but I also wanted to make a statement here and there,” says Smalls, who explains her vision for a favorite piece from the collaboration—a gym-friendly, French-terry rolled-sleeve tee—worn with “a patterned skirt and a pair of killer heels.”

Given that the 26-year-old top model is buddy buddy with the likes of Riccardo Tisci and Olivier Rousteing, it’s not a huge surprise that designing came to her as second nature. I’ve always kept my mind open as to how women dress,” she says. Both Smalls’ personal style and the True Religion collab play with tomboy ideas of various genres, for instance, a midriff-baring sweatshirt with the Spanish word sueña (meaning dream) printed across the front and heavy metal zippers on the ankles of satin jeggings.

Smalls also took particular care with the fit of her trousers and jeggings. “Your butt has to look good,” she says. “If it doesn’t, they’re not working!”
